Things are really starting to look nice around the garden. I took a few pictures of today’s favorites to share with you.

Two weeks ago, the daffodils were really taking center stage but today the parrot tulips are stealing the show. I planted them in October, layering them with other bulbs and then topped the whole container off with pansies for a year round show.

My Green Spice heuchera is looking fabulous, as always. This one is a very dependable plant. I use heucheras to shade my clematis roots to keep them cool during the summer heat. There are many varieties for sun or shade!

The colour is so great the on the Red Barrenwort right now. I think it makes a perfect addition to a shade container. It’s so airy and delicate looking, that the leaves almost appear to be floating.

Last but not least is the Lewisia. One of my favorites for Alpine troughs, as they like super good drainage. I suggest using cactus soil for potting them in and a ring of pea gravel under the leaves near the crown. If you keep them happy with the right conditions, they will keep you happy by blooming and blooming and blooming…

Slug B Gon Slug and Snail Bait

I tested a product last week that I hadn’t seen before and I give it a giant green thumbs up! In the past, I have used other slug and snail bait, which works fine and is safe for pets and wildlife, but I think Slug B Gon might be better. It also says on the package that it is safe for pets, birds and wildlife.

I found it very easy to apply. I just sprinkled the tiny pellets around in my containers and on the ground (instead of leaving piles or drawing barriers). Right away, I saw two slugs go to it and take a bite!

The pellets have been rained on 3 times now and are standing up well. I poked around last night and found evidence that it is indeed doing a very good job (I won’t describe the carnage for you squeamish ones out there…)

It also says on the package that “any uneaten bait will degrade and become part of the soil”. Good, then I won’t have to pick up any old, leftover, hardened, bait piles!

Would you like to grow fruit in your garden but feel as though you don’t have the space? You can! I live in a townhouse and I have an Asian Pear tree and an Apple Tree. They are both dwarf combo trees so they don’t get very big and they have their own pollinators. I get the most delicious apples in the fall and the pear tree is so beautiful right now that I have posted a picture of it.

My secret to container gardening is to just choose the right container (the bigger the better), fill with a good quality soil, and add organic nutrients such as worm castings. Every few years, I scrape away some of the old soil (and use it in the bottom of a new container) and then replace it will some fresh soil.

I plant Asiatic Lily bulbs and my favorite annuals around the roots so I have something to look at year round.

Potters 152 is set up and waiting for some warmer weather so we can get our tropical plants in! I can hardly stop myself from ordering my favorite orchids, air plants, gardenias, ferns, cactus, trailers, hibiscus, and hoya. I have a real passion for indoor plants. But alas, we are not heated here at 152 so I have to watch the weather and wait until it is safe for our floral friends. If you are interested in getting any tropicals, gift plants, or something new to try indoors (ever heard of a ZZ plant?), then let this be the spot to pick one up. I will have plants for every room in your house. Not enough light? Too hot? Have a black thumb? That’s okay. I can make some suggestions and help you choose something that can work for you and the conditions in your home. So keep watching (and waiting as patiently as possible, like me) and I should have lots of great indoor plants to offer soon. As well as cute and colourful pots to put them in and the perfect soil to grow them in!

Camellias

We have just received a beautiful selection of potted camellias. These are the nicest camellias that I’ve seen in the last 5 years. They come in several varieties and are in bud and bloom right now. We will be offering these camellias at a 25% discount while supplies last. They are not to be missed.

After our winter break, we are back at it and ready to set up for spring.

Store hours are Monday – Saturday 9-5:30. Sundays and Holidays 10-5.

Santa Pictures Pick Up

Did you forget to pick up your Santa pictures? I know it can get hectic around the Holidays!

The store will open again on Feb 11th at 9 am. We never throw out Santa pictures so you are welcome to come anytime after that to pick them up.
