So I was driving home from my grandmothers house the other day, and it was a grey, raining, gloomy day. But do you know what stood out to me? All the world coming to life. The lime green of the willows and bright red of the maples were all starting to leaf out! The Forsythias, witch hazels, daffodils and [...]

A dash of rosemary, a sprinkle of thyme, a pinch of parsley, a sackfull of sage… what? So I like sage!! And if you love herbs you’ll be happy to hear all the Potter’s stores have a nice variety of herbs in stock. Most herbs are hardy perennials too, so you don’t have to keep [...]

And of course I am talking about the sweet aromas of spring. Hyacinths, Sarcococca (sweet box) and my personal favorite Skimmia. Skimmia is a compact, evergreen, bushy shrub with dark green foliage that provides an excellent background for the showy flowers and berries. Part sun to full shade. Skimmia japonica varieties need a male pollinator with a [...]

This is one of those plants that when it is blooming peoples eyes bug out of their heads, tops of their heads pop off and steam comes out. Ok maybe I am exaggerating a little with the head popping off but the blooms on these will stop you in your tracks. Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is my [...]

Why does it always seem like you say some plant names you’re speaking a different language… mainly because you are (all plants have Latin names)! Gentian is no exception… funny name beauitful flower! These trumpet-shaped flowers are usually deep blue, but may vary from white, creamy and yellow to red. They are fully hardy and like full sun [...]

I was talking to a little fiddler on the roof the other day about all the wonderful colours of Echinacea available these days. ‘Sunrise’ has creamy yellow petals with a golden cone, ‘Sundown’ has burnt-orange petals with a brown cone, ‘Summer Skies’ has orange-yellow petals with a brown cone. Then there are always your stand-the-test-of-time [...]

No I’m not talking about the abundance of cotton wood blowing around these days or the absurdly cold weather we are having… I am talking about the Japanese Snowbell trees (Styrax japonica) that are all budded up and ready to bloom. These lightly fragrant trees come in white and pink and are quite the specimen where [...]

This plant is true to the title! Centaurea ‘Amethyst In Snow’ is a summer bloomer with a hardiness zone of 3-8 that needs full sun. Can we also talk about the flower — so pretty that I needed to get two of these babies! Grows 18-24″ tall X 12-18′ wide.

It seems to be a stellar year for the Iris. Our bearded species are spectacular and have been showcased near our pond, accompanied by the always-floriferous California lilac. What a show!!!!! We also have a great selection of other Iris species such as ensata, sibirica, pallida and setosa, all of which are very nice.
