For those who love the rustic country look of a wooden planter full of flowers, all the Potter’s locations have good supplies of half wine barrels. There’s nothing quite like the look and feel of a wooden oak barrel and customers have been enjoying these planters for years. Probably the greatest thing about half barrels is their sheer width… it’s hard to find a planter that holds so much soil. Great for annuals, great for trees/ shrubs, half barrels are an excellent planter option for the westcoast gardener. Oh, and remember to drill some holes in the bottom for drainage… there’s not too many plants that like wet feet 365 days a year!!

I remember my grandmother filling the bottom of her already very heavy pots with rocks making them almost impossible to move. Gone are the days of heavy pots! There are products out there that still allow you to fill the bottom of your pot to save on soil or help with drainage and add NO extra weight! One being a Ups A Daisy. This insert goes into your planter about halfway raising the bottom up! The next are Packing Pearls. These styrofoam balls act in the same manner as rocks adding drainage but minus the weight. So save you back from pain and lighten your pots!

Wow it was hot last week, but now it’s starting to feel like fall. We have mums, kale and bulbs galore! Also ornamental peppers to spice up your planters, and millet with the seed heads all popped up.

My favourite perennial right now is the Japanese Anenome, September Charm. Cute pink, poppy like flowers that appear in, you guessed it, September! It’s green an leafy all Spring and Summer… it’s like it’s hiding out to surprise you in the Fall. They grow to 3 feet tall and wide and like sun to part shade. (Although my friend has one that is 4 feet tall and growing in mostly shade!) They are such a soft pink, they would look good with some nice dark blue perennial salvia and bright yellow coreopsis for contrast. Great in a big pot or in the garden.

And stay away from my bulbs! Every fall I spend a small fortune on bulbs for the spring and I actually keep them over the Winter! I am going to share my secret with you on how I have come to actually enjoy them blooming in the spring. I plant all my bulbs in pots and cover them with a fine screen (window screening) and tape down the edges. As my tulip and daffodil bulbs pop up in the spring I take off the screening. The squirrels seem to leave them alone once they have popped out of the soil! I will beat them at their game yet!
