With an enthusiastic group of home vegetable gardeners in the area, we tend to have lots of peppers and tomatoes on hand. For tomatoes, the best sellers are usually roma’s, tumblers, beefsteaks and cherries. For peppers, it’s hot, hot, hot! People love the super hot ones here. Varieties like cayenne, super cayenne, chili, serrano, jalapeno and the most feared of all, the orange habanero. If you’re into home vegetable gardening I hope you’ll come visit us and see our bountiful selection on hand.

And if you love herbs you’ll be happy to hear all the Potter’s stores have a nice variety of herbs in stock. Most herbs are hardy perennials too, so you don’t have to keep planting most of them every year… except basil.. which is pretty darn tender. Come and see what we’ve got… your spice rack will be full in no time!

For those of you that own iPhones, there’s a really cool app out there called “Seasons”. It allows the user to see what fruits and vegetables are “in-season” at your local markets. It shows you when the local stuff is available and when the import stuff comes in. For example, you point on a map where you’re located (Pacific Northwest) and then you scroll down to “blackberries” and BAMMO, it tells you the months local blackberries are available in the markets and also when you can get imported blackberries. How awesome is that? You can read more about it here: http://www.seasonsapp.com/

I know that Chris wrote about this just a few days ago… but I have never seen so many vegetables and seeds go through our store in all my years here! It must be the economy, everyone wants to grow their own food. What a great idea! Growing your own veggies is fun and rewarding. My favourite is carrots. A few years ago I forgot that I even planted any carrot seeds and was wondering what was poking up in my garden. Behold! Enough carrots to feed an army! Herbs also seem to be a big hit this year. I think people are staying at home and enjoying their backyards and doing some BBQing. Fresh herbs are a great way to spruce up a meal. We have lots of veggie started packs, fresh potted herbs and multiple racks of seeds to choose from. Come on down and check out whats for dinner!

Wow, what a season for vegetables! Late in the winter I had heard a prediction in the news that we would see an increase in people growing their own vegetables. Money isn’t as free-flowing in this recession as it was about a year ago and, on top of that, more and more people are getting choosier about what they eat… and if they can grow it organically themselves without pesticides, all the better. It turns out these winter predictions were correct and we’ve seen quite an increase in consumers inquiring about and purchasing vegetable plants. So in one sense, I guess local garden centres are contributing to a healthier Canada… hooray!!
