Once again we had entries in White Rock’s Torchlight Parade which runs every BC Day weekend. This year it took place on Saturday Aug 1st. The parade starts once it’s dark, around 9:30.

Our House of Horrors entry consisted of a black Cadillac hearse of some vintage (which we own) with a wild, rabid wolf perched atop. In his teeth the wolf was holding the reins to the Cinderella type carriage being pulled behind. On top of the carriage is a 9 foot spider. Inside the carriage is the not so beautiful Zombie Bride. Her Zombie husband is walking alongside. This entry won Best Commercial Entry.

Incidentally, we purchased this carriage a few years ago. It was originally built for the Pasadena Rosebowl Parade back in the 60′s. That year it carried the Rose Bowl Queen complete with a driver and two coachmen standing on the back. It was covered with thousands upon thousands of fresh roses and was pulled by a team of eight horses. Reputed to have cost over $100,000 to put together it took first place and set a record for the most expensive float ever made. A record that has yet to be broken.

Just ahead of the House of Horrors Hearse was our Christmas Store S-Cargo with Santa and in his sleigh in tow. Alongside were Santa’s Elves giving out Christmas treats for all the kids along the parade route. Both Santa and the candies were a big hit with the kids. This entry won 3rd for Best Lighting. It was so bright I had to change my camera settings in order to get a (sort of) decent shot. It also won Grand Overall Winner for the entire parade. Considering the competition came from all over B.C. we are delighted to win these awards. Congratulations to each of the Potters staff who volunteered their time to put these great entries together. Haven’t a clue how you could top these…

This spring has been unusually cold and that has translated into a late start for everyone. However it looks like we have turned the corner and can finally say we are into good planting weather.

Our new store on 192nd opened about a month ago, even though we were still waiting on basic essentials like heat, water, power and phone lines. At 28,000 square feet, this is now our largest store. For comparison the old store (at the red barn) was 6200 square feet. The extra space will allow us to grow more of our own product. We will be planting trees and shrubs in the acreage surrounding the store a bit later this spring. If you normally shop at our other stores I invite you to take a tour of our new location. I should mention we have a full size replica of a Bull Elephant inside? More on that another time.

Repairs to our 152nd store were delayed due to a shortage of qualified contractors but we managed to get open by the middle of March. You may recall last December an out of control vehicle went screaming through the main gate, front doors, cash desks, office and two greenhouses before exiting into the Keg parking lot. Needless to say the damage was extensive.
However we think the changes we were able to make will make checking out much easier for everyone.

Our GM Cam Martin, who also manages our 72nd Ave. store, and I were at a haunted house trade show in Las Vegas in March. It was a four-day show and we needed every minute in order to see everything. I will leave it to Cam to spill the beans on what we have coming this year, but trust me, if you aren’t scared to death with our Hallowe’en House of Horrors this October, there is something seriously wrong with you.

See you at the store!
