    If I Could…

    Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

… I would create a flower that blooms 12 months of the year… that never loses it’s leaves… that can be cut back to the ground if it gets ugly and pops back up at an alarming speed… that never takes over the garden but acts as a tranquil accent to your many well-planned plantings… [...]

    Climbing Spinach

    Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Whoever thought you could get spinach that climbed!  These vines can grow 10-12 feet and are grown more for the foliage than for a salad….  although, I have had many customers tell me that it tastes great!  They like full sun to part shade and lots of water.  They even flower!

    Farmers Market At Potters 192

    Friday, June 26th, 2009

MMMmmm… it’s finally time for the ripe fruit to hit the Farmers Market at Potter 192.  Maan’s Farm was there last week with yummy strawberries, cherries and more!  Also Heppell’s potatoes were there too, with nugget potatoes picked that morning!  Can’t get any fresher than that!

    Sensitive Water Plant

    Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

The Aeschynomene fluitans (try saying that 10 times fast) or Large-leaf Sensitive Plant is the newest addition to our water plant section.   This neat little plant, which originates from Western Tanzania and Bostwana, is a fast spreading, floating marginal perennial that can grow up to 4.5m in wilder climates. The leaves are blue-green in [...]

    Hot Greenhouses

    Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

In the early June heat wave it got so hot in our greenhouses at 152nd that we had to install an industrial strength fan to help blow the hot air out. After just a few minutes we could definitely feel the difference and I think the cashiers were appreciative of the cooling efforts. Also appreciative [...]

    Blue Flowers

    Sunday, June 21st, 2009

“Where are your blue flowers?” This is a question that I probably hear at least twice a week, so here it is…. some blue flowers. Grace ward (Lithodora) is a very popular evergreen ground cover that  does very well in full sun. Also, there are those plants that are close to a blue/purple. For instance, hydrangea, California [...]

    Potters Farm Market Update

    Friday, June 19th, 2009

I’m sure you have heard about Potters Farmers market at the store on 192nd st.  I went out and snapped a few pictures during kids day on June 13th.  They had a giant bouncy castle and a swing ride in addition to all the farmers market vendors.  Ron Irving and friends sang and played guitar for everyone [...]

    Perfect Companions Part 1

    Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Blue and gold are a favourite colour combination of mine for the garden. They’re colours, that when put together, instantly draw your eye to them. A great example of this is the pairing of ‘Crater Lake Blue’ Veronica and ‘Tigers Eyes’ Rhus. The two make a perfect pairing atop a wall or in a stream-side planting. June [...]

    My Favourite Berry

    Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

While many would say Chuck and some might say Halle, my top three favourite berries go like this:   1) Blackberries 2) Pineapple 3) Raspberry   Yeah, yeah, I know pineapples aren’t technically a berry but I just changed the rules…and if you don’t like my pineapple pick, then change it to strawberries… score one [...]

    Hardy Gloxinia

    Sunday, June 14th, 2009

These favourites of old English gardens have very showy flowers and are ideal for mixed borders and rock gardens. Ranging from a magenta to pink and white these trumpet shaped blooms prefer a light to part shade environment.
